TikTok has over 1.5 billion active users worldwide. But what does this app really collect about you, and how can you limit its access to your data?

What TikTok collects about you

  • Usage data: Every video watched, how long, when, whether you skipped parts
  • Biometric data: Depending on version and country, facial recognition for effects
  • Device data: Model, OS, network, contacts (if permission granted), location
  • Browsing behavior: What you search for, links you click within the app

Legal concerns

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company. Governments (USA, EU, UK) have banned TikTok on government devices. The question is whether user data can be accessed by Chinese authorities — a question that remains in legal debate.

⚠️ Several governments have banned TikTok on professional devices of civil servants. If you use TikTok for work, check your employer's policy.

How to limit data collection

  • Deny location, contacts and camera permissions if unnecessary
  • Settings → Privacy → Disable ad personalization
  • Don't connect TikTok to your other accounts (Facebook, Google)
  • Use a dedicated email to create your account
  • Enable two-factor authentication
💡 If privacy is a priority, consider using TikTok on a separate device without sensitive data, or via a browser rather than the app.
