Instagram is one of hackers' favorite targets: resold accounts, fake contests, phishing via DMs. Here are 5 steps to effectively secure your account.

Step 1: Enable two-factor authentication

Settings → Security → Two-Factor Authentication → Choose "Authentication App" (safer than SMS). Once enabled, even if someone steals your password, they won't be able to log in without your phone.

Step 2: Check connected third-party apps

Apps and Websites → Active → Revoke access to all apps you don't recognize or no longer use. These apps may have access to your account and data.

Step 3: Check login activity

Security → Login Activity. Check this section regularly. If you see a login from an unknown location or device, immediately change your password and log out all sessions.

⚠️ Instagram will NEVER contact you via DM for security matters. Any such message is a scam.

Step 4: Beware of fake contests

Fake contests ("You won $500! Click here...") are one of the most widespread scams on Instagram. They're used to steal your credentials or get you to follow fraudulent accounts.

Step 5: Use a strong and unique password

Never use the same password elsewhere. A strong password has at least 12 characters, mixes letters, numbers and special characters. Use a password manager.

💡 Set your account to "Private" if you're not seeking visibility. This considerably reduces your exposure to scams and harassment.
