LinkedIn has become a prime hunting ground for fraudsters. Fake recruiters, investment scams, information gathering for spear phishing... here's how to detect a fake profile in seconds.

Signs of a fake profile

  • Too-perfect profile photo: AI-generated or stolen from another site. Right-click → Search image to verify
  • Vague professional history: Positions without descriptions, companies that can't be found, dates that don't add up
  • Only recent connections: A recently created profile with many connections is often fraudulent
  • Unsolicited overly advantageous messages: Exceptional job offer, investment proposal "guaranteeing" high returns

Most common LinkedIn scams

  • Fake recruiter: Offers a very well-paid job, requests personal or financial information
  • Professional romance scam: Builds a relationship of trust then proposes a fraudulent investment
  • Data collection: Uses your information for targeted spear phishing attacks
⚠️ Never share your bank details, passport or identity documents with someone met only online, even after weeks of exchanges.
💡 Use reverse image search (Google Images, TinEye) to verify if the profile photo is authentic or generated/stolen.
